Magmeter Flow Meters and Mag Meters: Heavy-Duty Slurry Testing Hardware for Industrial Processing

Quick Answer: Magmeter flow meters are the most dependable inline instruments for heavy-duty slurry testing and industrial processing. A full-bore electromagnetic flow meter with a polyurethane or EPDM liner, tungsten carbide electrodes, and 4-20 mA HART output works well for mining slurries, dredging, and mineral processing. Send Silver Instruments your pipe size, solids content by weight, pressure in bar, and flow range in cubic meters per hour to get a specific model and price.

Slurry flow measurement is not a clean water job. The fluid has sand, ore particles, tailings, or chemical solids. Standard mechanical meters wear out fast. Magmeter flow meters have no moving parts. They do not obstruct the flow path. That is why they are common in heavy-duty slurry testing hardware.

Silver Automation Instruments supplies mag meters for industrial processing across Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. We have seen these meters on copper mines in Chile, dredge lines in Indonesia, and mineral sand plants in Vietnam. The right liner and electrode combination makes the difference between a meter that lasts years and a meter that fails in weeks.

Why Magmeter Flow Meters Fit Heavy-Duty Slurry Testing

Electromagnetic flow meters measure conductive liquids using Faraday law. Slurries with water, acid, or caustic carriers are normally conductive. Magmeter flow meters give a volumetric flow reading without pressure drop. They tolerate high solids loading better than turbine, ultrasonic, or differential pressure meters in most mining and dredging applications.

Here is the thing. A full-bore mag meter is the preferred hardware when the slurry contains particles above 200 microns or solids above 5 percent by weight. In practice, this covers copper concentrate, iron ore tailings, sand slurry, cement grout, and sludge.

Liner and Electrode Selection for Slurry Service

Most engineers skip this part and then replace a failed meter after six months. Liner selection controls abrasion resistance. Electrode selection controls signal stability and chemical compatibility. For heavy slurry, we recommend polyurethane or natural rubber liners. Both resist abrasive particles well. For chemical attack or high temperature, PTFE or PFA liners are safer options.

Electrodes for slurry should be tungsten carbide or Hastelloy C. Tungsten carbide is hard and resists sand and ore wear. Hastelloy C handles acidic slurries and seawater. Titanium works for seawater and brine but is not the best choice for abrasive ore. 316L stainless steel is too soft for most heavy slurry duty. A copper mine in Chile learned this after replacing insertion probes every three months. They switched to a DN200 full-bore mag meter with polyurethane liner and tungsten carbide electrodes. Flow signal stabilized and the meter lasted more than two seasons.

Typical Specifications We Recommend

For heavy-duty slurry testing hardware, these are the baseline specifications we quote most often:

Pipe size range: DN25 to DN600 standard, larger on request. Liner: polyurethane, EPDM, natural rubber, PTFE, or PFA. Electrodes: tungsten carbide, Hastelloy C, titanium, or tantalum. Accuracy: plus or minus 0.5 percent of reading for stable slurry flow. Outputs: 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and RS485 Modbus. Power supply: 85 to 265 V AC or 24 V DC. Process connection: wafer or flanged, PN10, PN16, or ANSI 150. Protection class: IP67 standard, IP68 for flooded pits.

A typical model for mining slurry is the Silver Instruments SI-MAG 300 full-bore electromagnetic flow meter. For a DN100 line at 120 cubic meters per hour with 15 percent solids, we would quote a polyurethane liner, tungsten carbide electrodes, and 4-20 mA HAR
