Basic Flow Meter Sourcing: Fluid Dynamics Sizing and Selection Framework
Quick Answer: For most industrial flow meter purchases, start with pipe size, fluid type, flow range, viscosity, pressure, and temperature. This basic flow meter sourcing and flow meter selection framework works for most liquid and gas lines. Silver Automation Instruments uses these values to select a Coriolis, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, vortex, oval gear, or thermal mass meter. Send the values and our engineers will return a meter selection with a price range in USD.
We serve process plants in Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
1. Start With Fluid Data, Not Product Sheets
Many buyers ask for a flow meter price first. In practice, a price without fluid data is not useful. A 2 inch water line and a 2 inch diesel line need different meters. Water has conductivity. Diesel does not. An electromagnetic meter works for water but not for diesel. An oval gear meter handles diesel because it measures volume directly.
At a paint factory in Indonesia, a turbine meter on solvent with 0.8 cP viscosity drifted after three weeks. The replacement was an oval gear meter with PTFE gears. Flow range was 50 to 3000 kg/h. The controller received a 4-20 mA HART signal.
2. Sizing Math You Can Use in the Field
Flow meter sizing starts with velocity. For liquids, keep velocity between 0.5 and 5 m/s. For gas, keep velocity between 5 and 30 m/s. Below the minimum, the meter may not register. Above the maximum, accuracy drops and meter life shortens.
For liquid line size, inside diameter in mm times velocity in m/s times 2.827 equals flow rate in m3/h. A DN50 line at 2 m/s gives about 14 m3/h. A DN50 electromagnetic flow meter with a span of 0.2 to 20 m3/h fits well. For compressed air at 8 bar, correct for pressure and temperature. Send actual operating conditions, not standard conditions.
3. Meter Selection by Fluid and Industry
Electromagnetic flow meter. For raw water, wastewater, sludge, acids, and conductive liquids above 5 µS/cm. Use DN15 to DN300 on municipal water and in seawater flow meter for desalination plant applications.
Coriolis mass flow meter. For chemical batching, palm oil, food oil, and high viscosity fluids. It gives mass flow and density in one device. Use it when the recipe is measured in kg/h.
Oval gear flow meter. For diesel, lube oil, fuel oil, and solvents with viscosity from 1 to 1000 cP. Common on marine fuel transfer and burner supply.
Vortex flow meter. For steam, compressed air, and clean liquids with Reynolds number above 20,000. Typical on utility steam lines in food and textile plants.
Thermal mass flow meter. For compressed air, biogas, and nitrogen. Reads mass flow directly. Typical in car plants and packaging lines.
Ultrasonic flow meter. For large pipes and retrofit jobs where cutting the pipe is not possible. Clamp on models fit DN25 to DN3000. Typical on chilled water and irrigation canals.
4. Fluid Dynamics That Change Accuracy
Viscosity changes the velocity profile inside a pipe. High viscosity fluids have a parabolic profile. The center moves faster than the wall. An electromagnetic meter sees the average velocity if enough straight pipe is installed. An oval gear meter does not care about the profile because it captures volume in gear pockets.
Gas density changes with pressure and

5. Sourcing Checklist for Industrial Buyers
We see many requests arrive with only pipe size. Silver Automation Instruments needs fluid name, flow range, pipe size and schedule, process temperature, process pressure, viscosity or density, hazardous zone class, output signals, and power supply.
For a seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, the selected meter was a DN100 electromagnetic flow meter with rubber liner and titanium electrodes. Output was 4-20 mA HART plus RS485 Modbus. In Mexico, a wastewater project used a DN150 electromagnetic meter with PTFE liner and chlorine resistance. A remote mount version was selected because the sump pit flooded in rain season.
6. Common Sizing Errors and Quick Fixes
One error is using a meter sized for one product on a line that runs multiple products. A dairy plant in Thailand tried an electromagnetic flow meter on milk and cleaning CIP solution. The meter worked for milk but drifted when the CIP solution dropped below 5 µS/cm. The fix was a Coriolis meter on the pasteurizer loop and a separate electromagnetic meter for raw water.
Here is the thing. Most engineers skip straight run checks until the first audit. A vortex meter after a partially open butterfly valve reads 2 to 5 percent high. Install 15D straight pipe upstream and 5D downstream for a vortex meter. For an electromagnetic meter, 5D upstream and 2D downstream is often enough.
A fuel depot in Nigeria replaced a mechanical meter with an oval gear meter. Truck loading flow was 800 L/min. The meter body was aluminum with PPS gears. Pulse output went to a batch controller. Downtime dropped to near zero.
7. Quick FAQ on Flow Meter Sizing
What data do I need for a flow meter quote? Send pipe size, fluid, flow range in m3/h or kg/h, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, and output signal. Silver Instruments will select the meter type.
Which meter works for both water and diesel? None does both well. Use an electromagnetic meter for water and an oval gear meter for diesel. If the line carries both, install two meters or use a Coriolis meter if budget allows.
What output signal is standard? 4-20 mA HART is the most common. Pulse output works for batching. RS485 Modbus is useful for remote monitoring.
Do I need ATEX approval? For solvent storage, paint mixing, or refinery zones, yes. Silver Instruments can supply ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 versions for vortex, thermal mass, and oval gear meters.
How long does delivery take? Stock meters ship in 5 to 10 days. Custom liners, exotic electrodes, and high pressure versions usually ship in 3 to 4 weeks.
